Ghanaian media personality and movie producer Ola Michael has expressed opposition to a proposed government policy that would require individuals to verify their identity before accessing pornographic websites in Ghana.
The proposal was disclosed by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, during the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family, Sovereignty and Values.
According to the Ningo-Prampram MP, the government is developing a policy for Cabinet consideration that would require users to provide a valid form of identification, such as a driver's licence or a national ID card, before accessing adult content online.
Mr. George explained that the measure is intended to protect children from exposure to explicit material on the internet.
“We’re working on going to Cabinet on that to make sure that before you access any X-rated site, you must put either your driver’s licence or your national ID card, so that we know who you are and who is going to that site to prevent children from being exposed to such content,” he stated.
Reacting to the proposal during a discussion on Accra-based Peace FM, Ola Michael said he would be unhappy if the policy results in a complete restriction of pornography for adults.
According to him, pornography has, to some extent, contributed to public understanding and discussions surrounding sexual matters.
“It is the reason that when there is a discussion about sex, we are able to say something. I will not be happy if pornography is totally restricted from everyone,” he said.
