Host of Afisem on Lawson TV, Maame Frimpomaa Korankye (MFK), has called for DNA testing to be covered under Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to help address paternity disputes and related family legal matters across the country.
According to her, expanding NHIS coverage to include DNA tests would make the service more accessible and affordable for many Ghanaians who currently struggle to pay for such procedures when legal or family disputes arise.
MFK explained that the high cost of DNA testing prevents many people from seeking scientific confirmation in sensitive cases, leading to prolonged disagreements and emotional distress within families.
She stressed that incorporating DNA testing into the NHIS package would promote fairness, reduce conflict, and ease the financial burden on individuals involved in paternity and inheritance disputes.
What is DNA Test?
A DNA test is a scientific method used to identify a person’s genetic information by analysing biological samples such as saliva, blood, or hair. It is commonly used to determine biological relationships, especially in paternity cases, where it helps confirm whether a man is the biological father of a child.
Beyond family matters, DNA testing is also used in forensic investigations, medical research, and identifying individuals in legal cases.
