Ghanaian highlife singer and songwriter Kuami Eugene has opened up about a difficult period in his life, revealing how he lost close family members and faced a life-threatening accident within a short span of time.
Speaking in a recent interview with Anita Akuffo, the “Angela” hitmaker said the emotional toll began when he lost his grandmother, followed by the passing of his father the following year—two people he described as very close to him.
According to him, the situation worsened after he was involved in a near-fatal accident that left him hospitalised for about four months.
“There was a period in my life when I lost almost everything and a lot of important people around me. I lost my grandma, whom I was very, very close to, and then the following year I lost my dad, too. On top of that, there were family issues, and then I had the accident,” he recounted.
Kuami Eugene said the only relief during that period was having financial stability, which helped him manage medical bills and funeral arrangements.
“I thank God I had enough money when all these things happened because I had to travel home, bury my grandma, bury my dad, and also pay for surgeries and hospital bills. If I didn’t have money at the time, things would have been very bad,” he said.
He added that being hospitalised for four months also meant a complete halt to his music career and income, as he was unable to perform or attend shows.
“The same person taking care of all these responsibilities had to stay in the hospital for four months. And four months without shows means no income because that’s where I make my money,” he explained.
The musician further revealed that during his recovery, he also had to deal with negative comments on social media, including false claims that he had died.
“I had a lot of hate from social media instead of people to support me. There were comments like ‘I bet Kuami Eugene is dead now…’ That is the darkest thing that has happened to me since I became Kuami Eugene,” he added.
