Actress Nikki Samonas has reflected on the backlash she received following her role in the 2012 film My First Wife, in which she starred alongside Nigerian actor Jim Iyke.
Speaking in an interview on Adom TV, the actress said she had always expected people to treat her kindly, but an experience early in her career made her feel as though she was disliked by some Ghanaians.
She explained that the controversy stemmed from an intimate scene she played with Jim Iyke in the movie, which triggered a wave of criticism and negative reactions from the public at the time.
According to her, many people misunderstood the scene and directed harsh comments at her, despite it being purely a professional acting role.
“It was just a movie o, I beg you, it was just a movie. Like it was horrible. I wanted the earth to divide, then I enter so it closes. It was 2012, 14 years ago,” she recalled.
Nikki Samonas said the intense criticism took a toll on her emotionally, forcing her to withdraw from public attention and avoid social media discussions during that period.
“I really coiled that time. If I knew ignoring comments on social media was good at that time, I wouldn’t have read them because it was really bad,” she added.
She further revealed that the backlash was so overwhelming that she temporarily stepped away from acting opportunities, including ignoring calls from Ghanaian filmmaker Abdul Salam Mumuni, as she had lost interest in returning to the screen at the time.
The actress also shared how she eventually got the role in the film, explaining that Jim Iyke had seen her performance on another movie set while filming in Ghana and personally selected her for the project after admiring her acting talent.
