Ghanaian dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., known in entertainment circles as Shatta Wale, has sparked widespread debate after announcing a paid membership scheme for his fan base, the Shatta Movement.

The award-winning musician made the announcement on X on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, stating that the initiative is intended to formalise membership of the Shatta Movement and create a structured database of supporters worldwide.

Under the new arrangement, fans will be required to pay GH₵100 to obtain a Gold Card membership, which Shatta Wale says will grant access to exclusive benefits and services associated with the movement.

“We are ready to officialise our Shatta Movement members with real identity and data. Get your Gold Card membership after registration with just GH₵100 to enjoy premium services around the world,” he wrote.

The announcement quickly generated mixed reactions on social media, with many users questioning the decision to charge fans for official membership.

Critics argued that loyal supporters should not be made to pay to belong to a fan base they have supported over the years, particularly given the artiste’s claims of significant earnings from international shows and music deals.

Others also raised concerns about whether the benefits attached to the membership would justify the GH₵100 registration fee.

However, some fans defended the initiative, saying it could help bring structure to the Shatta Movement and create opportunities and organised benefits for members globally.

Shatta Wale, one of Ghana’s most prominent and controversial music figures, has built a strong following through the Shatta Movement, which has grown into one of the country’s most influential entertainment fan bases.

The announcement has once again placed the artiste at the centre of public discussion, with opinions divided over whether the paid membership model represents an innovative business strategy or an unnecessary cost to fans.
