Ghanaian socialite and musician Showboy has weighed in on the recently passed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill, suggesting that it could have unintended benefits for some Ghanaians living overseas.

In a post shared on X on May 31, 2026, Showboy argued that the legislation could strengthen asylum claims for certain Ghanaians residing abroad, particularly those facing immigration challenges in the United States.

According to him, some individuals may cite the law as evidence that they could face discrimination, persecution, or legal consequences if they are returned to Ghana.

“The anti-gay bill they passed will help a lot of Ghanaians in immigration detention centres in America seek asylum and file for CAT (Convention Against Torture) protection,” he wrote.

He further explained that asylum seekers could claim they identify as LGBTQ and argue that returning to Ghana would expose them to potential arrest or other forms of persecution.

“For example, you can easily tell the judge that you are gay in Ghana and that you could be arrested if you return home, and then seek asylum. The bill has both positive and negative effects. It will benefit some Ghanaians living abroad,” he added.

Parliament Passes Bill Again

Parliament approved the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill for a second time on May 29, 2026, reigniting national debate over the controversial legislation.
