Nearly 20 years after his widely publicised separation from gospel musician Esther Smith, Rev Ahenkan Bonsu has shared his side of the events that led to the collapse of their marriage.

Speaking during an interview on Radio XYZ, the pastor recounted how he came to believe the relationship had broken down beyond repair after learning unexpected details about Esther Smith while she was abroad.

According to him, the singer had travelled overseas for a programme, but repeated efforts to reach her were unsuccessful. He later received a call from a friend in the United States who informed him that Esther Smith had attended a Church of Pentecost gathering in New York, where an announcement was reportedly made about an upcoming naming ceremony.

Rev Bonsu said the news came as a shock because he was unaware she had been pregnant or had delivered a child.

He explained that his friend recorded the ceremony and forwarded the footage to him electronically. After reviewing it, he said he later presented the video to their church bishop.

“That was the moment I decided to walk away from the marriage,” he said.

The pastor further disclosed that before the incident, he had discussed with Esther Smith a name he hoped to give a future child, adding that the eventual naming of the child deeply affected him emotionally.

According to him, when church leadership questioned Esther Smith about the matter, she initially denied it until the video recording was played before them.

“All she said afterwards was that she was sorry,” he alleged.

Rev Bonsu also claimed that after the divorce, their eldest child remained with him while Esther Smith left with the two younger children. He added that he has not seen the younger children since the separation.

The marriage between Esther Smith and Rev Ahenkan Bonsu drew significant public attention in the late 2000s before eventually ending after several years together.

Over the years, Esther Smith has publicly presented a different account of the marriage, alleging that she experienced abuse during the relationship. She has also rejected allegations surrounding her children and stated in previous interviews that false claims about her personal life negatively affected her for many years.
