Veteran Kumawood actor Papa Kumasi has shared a distressing account of how he narrowly escaped a mob attack at Buokrom in the Ashanti Region.
He explained that the incident happened when he accompanied a friend who had gone to collect a mobile phone previously given to a woman.
According to him, he was waiting at the scene when events suddenly took an unexpected turn.
“I accompanied my friend and while I was sitting and waiting, a lady came to sit beside me. She was arguing with someone on the phone. Not long after, a man rushed towards us and she took to her heels. The man then turned to me and accused me of being the one encouraging her to insult him,” he recounted.
Papa Kumasi said matters escalated quickly before he had the chance to clarify the situation.
“He didn’t even hear my side of the story and landed me a hot slap. As I tried to calm him down, he slapped me again. At that moment, I realised I had to defend myself, so I also slapped him back,” he said.
He further alleged that the man raised an alarm, calling him a thief, which attracted a crowd that turned on him.
“They really beat me. Some used stones and others came with wood. It became a chaotic scene. Nobody wanted to listen,” he said.
The actor added that the companions he came with left him during the incident, leaving him vulnerable.
He said he eventually managed to escape and was later recognised by someone who intervened and helped him get to safety.
Reflecting on the incident, Papa Kumasi said it reinforced the importance of not rushing to judgment based on one-sided accounts, noting that the situation could have ended in tragedy without timely intervention.
